What actually happens to your file after upload
When you upload a full-resolution image, a delivery platform doesn’t serve that giant file to every viewer. It generates smaller derivatives — a web-sized preview, thumbnails — for fast loading. Every one of those is a re-encode, and a re-encode is where colour goes wrong if the pipeline isn’t managed:
- Profile stripped. The derivative loses its ICC profile, so viewers guess — usually wrong.
- Wrong conversion. A wide-gamut source squeezed into sRGB without a proper conversion desaturates.
- Assumed sRGB on a non-sRGB file. The numbers are interpreted as sRGB when they aren’t.
A colour-managed pipeline does the opposite: it converts to sRGB deliberately and embeds the sRGB profile on every derivative, so viewers render it correctly.
